Roof repair is not as complicated as it sounds; the process is pretty much straightforward, as a matter of fact. However, myths about it still persist. In today’s post, the roofing contractors at DryTech Roofing LLC debunk some of the most common myths about roof repairs.
You Can Never Have Too Much Roof Insulation
Inexperienced roofers tend to recommend an insulation “upgrade” as an add-on to their roof repair service. This could be beneficial if your roof doesn’t have sufficient insulation in the first place, as it could help you save on energy costs. However, there is such a thing as too much insulation, which can block roof ventilation and trap moisture, which can encourage mold growth.
It’s Better to Install a New Roof Over the Old One
While the practice of installing a new roof over an old one does exist, it’s seldom the better option. The only real benefit to this practice, which is called reroofing, is that you can save on some of the labor costs because it doesn’t require tear-off and removal. However, legitimate roofing contractors would not recommend this unless under certain, very specific conditions, since it doesn’t allow an opportunity to address hidden roofing issues. Roofing manufacturers also wouldn’t allow this option, as they won’t be able to guarantee that the roof will perform as designed.
All Asphalt Shingles Are the Same
There’s a small bit of truth mixed with this myth. All asphalt shingle products share the same structure: an asphalt-soaked backing covered with granules on top. But that is where the similarities end. There are thousands of possible combinations of backing materials and types of granules, as well as profiles like traditional three-tab shingles and laminated shingles. There are also features like reflectivity, impact resistance and algae resistance.
It’s important to note that asphalt shingle products are not interchangeable, which means you can’t just pick any asphalt shingle to replace damaged or missing ones. Fortunately, a good roofing contractor can help you pick the right replacement shingles in case exact ones are not available.
