Warm air naturally rises. This is why many roofers recommend insulating your attic to minimize heat losses through your roof. During winter, the increased temperature in the roof’s structure can cause condensation, which can lead to moisture problems in many of its vulnerable wooden parts. Additionally, the higher temperature levels can also promote ice dam formation, damaging your roof even further. It’s a good thing you can minimize or even avoid these problems entirely with adequate ventilation and insulation of your attic.

Attic Insulation

Let our experts at DryTech Roofing LLC walk you through the fundamentals of attic insulation and how it can help make your home more comfortable and efficient even during the colder seasons:

Loose-Fill Insulation

If you’re in search of effective insulation, most roofers usually recommend one of two common types: loose-fill and batt and roll. Loose-fill insulation is perfect for retrofitting an attic that was not built with insulation. While its R-values are not the highest, fiberglass loose-fills are often decent enough to help mitigate energy losses in homes in temperate climates. Loose-fill insulation is also affordable, however, it needs a moisture barrier to protect it against vapor absorption.

Batt and Roll

Batt and roll insulation is another common type of insulation used in many attics. This material comes in sheets made with either fiberglass or mineral wool. These sheets are then used to cover dry walls, ceilings and floors, making for a less messy installation. Proper planning is needed when installing batt and roll insulation in areas where there is electrical wiring present.

Spray Foam Insulation

When you’ve had roof repair jobs in the past, the roof deck and, subsequently, the attic walls, may have gaps that are not easily accessible by loose-fill and batt and roll. In these cases, spray foam can be used. Spray foam comes in liquid form that when sprayed over an area turns into an insulating foam. It offers high insulation ratings but is also a little bit more expensive than the other two common types of insulation.
