Holiday lights can make a neighborhood look more festive and bright for the holiday season. Your home can play a role in making your neighborhood truly festive. Hanging holiday lights, however, is not for everyone, as roofing and siding contractors would know. It takes a bit of work and you should always keep these warnings in mind:

  • Don’t do it alone. Ask a friend or family member to help.

  • Don’t do it if you’re uncomfortable with heights. Hire someone else to do it.

  • Wear protective gear and avoid loose clothing.

  • Don’t do it if your doctor advises you against it. Hire a professional instead.

  • Make sure your ladder is not old or broken.

  • Don’t forget to follow the building and safety codes at all times.

Having given those reminders, DryTech Roofing LLC, your roofing and vinyl siding contractors, also remind you not to install holiday lights by puncturing your roof or siding. Having a festive display isn’t worth the damage it will cause to your home.

Here’s how to hang your holiday lights without a single nail or staple wire.

Use Adhesive Strips

Adhesive strips are great for hanging holiday lights on vertical portions of your home. Make sure to use adhesive strips that are easy to remove and don’t cause paint to peel.

Use Hanging Hooks

You can buy hooks that attach to the edge of your gutters. There are also hooks that attach to drip edges or shingle edges. Don’t use hooks that require lifting up your shingles.

The most common hooks come in these styles:

  • Simple hooks that attach to the gutter. You can hang the line directly on these hooks.

  • Clips that attach to the roof peak. For safety, roofing and siding contractors typically recommend hiring a professional to use these hooks, as they entail working at the peak of the roof. These hooks attach by gripping the edge of the shingle. They are good for forcing the bulbs to face a particular direction; in most cases, the front of the house.

  • Clips that attach to the line. These also hang from gutters but they provide a firmer grip on the holiday light lines. They’re best for icicle lights or if you don’t need the lights to face a particular direction.

  • Clips that attach to the bulb. For hanging your holiday lights in such a way that the bulbs face one direction, these clips are a great option. They may require more work, especially if you have to remove the bulbs from the line before placing them in the hook, but at least your lights will look perfect.
